GLWA 14 Mile Water Main Update 01/25/22: Water main break repair and system resiliency improvements completed

“The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) is pleased to report that water transmission main repair and renewal work along the 1.5-mile stretch of 14 Mile Road has been completed. For those communities that may have experienced lower water pressure since the break in late October, water pressure has been returned to normal levels.

In addition to repairing the break in a 20-foot section of the 48-inch water transmission main, GLWA proactively renewed 18 segments of pipe, adding as much as 50 years to their service life. The installation of two new valves also provides for greater operational flexibility in the future.

Finally, two-way traffic on 14 Mile from Halsted to Farmington Road has also been restored.” – Cheryl Porter, Chief Operating Officer-Water & Field Services, GLWA

“Ensuring resiliency in the regional system is one of GLWA’s top priorities. The repair and renewal work done here is the perfect example of the balance between our commitment to maintaining high level of services to our member partners and proactive asset management. I am incredibly grateful for the outstanding collaboration and support from our Field Services crews and contractors, member partners, stakeholders and fellow utilities. Completing this work effectively and as efficiently as possible is truly a result of everyone working together.” – Suzanne Coffey, Interim Chief Executive Officer, GLWA
