DETROIT – At approximately 4:30 a.m. today, the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) discovered a break on a 48-inch water transmission main on 14 Mile Road at Verona, which is between Drake and Farmington Roads in Farmington Hills. The break appears to be the result of a transient pressure wave created in the regional water transmission system by an external power interruption to GLWA’s North Service Center.
Field Service crews are on-site working to isolate the break in order to assess the situation and determine next steps.
As a result of no water pressure in a portion of the city of Novi (see attached map), and in Walled Lake both areas have been placed under a precautionary boil water advisory. When water pressure is returned, even if residents are still under a Boil Water Advisory, they should follow the actions noted in this FAQ on Boil Water Advisories.
To assist the impacted communities, GLWA has sent water trucks to Walled Lake and Novi to make one gallon containers available for residents. The water trucks, available beginning at 10:30 a.m., will be located in the following locations:
NOVI (Two Water Trucks)
• Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital, 47601 Grand River Ave.
o Truck is being stationed at the hospital’s loading dock
Walled Lake (One Water Truck)
• Walled Lake Municipal Complex, 1499 E. West Maple Road
Other GLWA customer communities being impacted (reduced water pressures) include the city of Wixom, the city of Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield Township, and Commerce Township.
This is a developing situation, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
